North of the 45th: 17th Annual Upper Midwest Juried Exhibition
Northern Michigan Univeristy DeVos Art Museum
Entry Deadline: Mar. 18
We are seeking entries for North of the 45th, an annual juried exhibition of artists living in the area north of the 45th parallel in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. This line, the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole, is often associated with being “up north.” The exhibition showcases the breadth and depth of artists from rural and urban areas living in this upper Midwest region.
The North of the 45th exhibition has been produced each summer since 2008. Each year, the show is selected from a pool of submissions by arts professionals. Every juror looks through hundreds of images to create an exhibition; no two presentations are the same.
Eligibility: Open to MI, MN, and WI residents, 18+, living north of the 45th parallel (up to 45.9°). Work made within last 3 years; work previously exhibited at the Museum is not eligible.
Submissions: All entries must be submitted by creating an account at devos.slideroom.com.
Fee: $20 to submit 1-5 images/works; Cash prizes will be awarded.

This year’s juror is Rebecca Heidenberg. Heidenberg is a curator, cultural producer, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Minneapolis gallery Dreamsong. Heidenberg was awarded a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004 and an MA from The New School in 2016. Beyond implementing a full exhibition program, Rebecca collaborates with her partner to produce Dreamsong’s public programming, including talks, performances, and screenings, and they have participated in art fairs including Frieze Los Angeles, Expo Chicago, and The Armory Show. Heidenberg’s first feature-length film, Queens of the Revolution (2020), is a portrait of Mejunje, a cultural center in Santa Clara that paved the road for LGBTQ+ rights in Cuba. The film screened at several festivals, including the Harlem International Film Festival, Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, and Miami Film Festival. In 2021, Heidenberg launched Twin Cities Art Week through Dreamsong, an annual celebration of contemporary art in Minneapolis and St. Paul, which features events at over twenty venues, from small artist-run spaces to leading galleries and major institutions, including the Walker Art Center.
