Entry Deadline: Mar. 1
Applications are now being accepted for the Starry Night Exposure Program, in partnership with the Select Fair. Located in the Chelsea district of New York City from May 8 to 11, 2014 during the Frieze Art Fair.
The third edition of the New York “Frieze Week” will feature hundreds of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries and print publishers and the Exposure Program will be at the epicenter of it. Applications are now being reviewed to exhibit with us this May 9th to 12th. Our dedicated staff will be showcasing a small selection of contemporary artists’ work, bringing them to the international stage and offering and end-to-end presentation of our catalogue of selected artists. This opportunity includes no-strings-attached representation, as well as access to collectors, dealers, and gallerists. Emerging and established 2D, video, and multimedia artists encouraged to apply.
The Starry Night Exposure Program is dedicated to artists who want to exhibit, sell and promote their work. It was designed with the serious artist in mind, and offers comprehensive representation in a place swimming with dealers, galleries and collectors. Whether one is hoping to find gallery representation, sell their work, or just get their name in front of the art world, having a presence at this highly recognized venue represents a major step in any artist’s career. We encourage both emerging and established artists to apply.
ENTRIES: All 2D, video and multimedia works will be accepted for consideration, but total dimensions cannot exceed 30”x30”.
PROGRAM INCLUDES: End to end exhibition and portfolio presentation by dedicated staff. Get seen by thousands of serious buyers with access to collectors, dealers and gallerists without the high cost of renting a booth. No-strings representation to help our artists get picked up by a gallery. Participate in exclusive VIP events in New York or just ship your work to us and we’ll do the rest.
ENTRY PROCESS: Begin by filling out the Application. A current CV or Artist Resume- PDF/DOC Artist Statement / Bio Work samples – A minimum of 8 images is required. If you are a filmmaker, you may bypass these images and submit a video or a link to a video, although stills will also be considered.
CURATION: When you apply to the Exposure program, your work will be evaluated by the our curators for placement in the show. You can submit up to ten digital images of work for consideration, or you can submit images that are indicative of a body of work that you are currently working on. Once accepted, we will select the pieces we think will perform the best at the fair and secure them for the exhibition.
PRESENTATION: In April, you will ship your work to New York, where we will receive it, hang it, light it properly, and give you non-exclusive gallery representation. You are welcome to come to New York in person, but travel and accommodations are NOT included as a part of the Exposure program. Regardless of your attendance, we will be on site to represent your work for you.
PROMOTION: As an Exposure artist, you will be included in all print and online promotional materials related to the Exposure program at the Fair, and will be showcased on the Starry Night Exposure web site. This means you will be featured as a Select Art Fair Exposure artist, and of course in our online promotions, a link to your web site will be included, in an effort to drive as much traffic to your work as possible. If you don’t have a web site that you are proud of, we will be working with accepted artists to discuss design and development of their personal web site.
ELIGIBILITY: The Exposure program is designed for emerging and established visual artists who are ready to bring their work to a broad, international audience. If you are a visual artist who is looking for gallery representation, would like to connect with a global community of dealers and collectors, or you are ready to broaden the size and scope of shows you are in beyond your city or region, then you should seriously consider applying for the Exposure program.
PROGRAM COST: The total price for the Exposure program is $3000. The Exposure program is the most cost efficient way to bring your artwork to the Fair, and includes curation of the show, lighting and hanging of the artwork, full time representation of the artist and their work for all days of the show and VIP party, creation of a digital portfolio for each artist which includes digital images, artist statement, CV/ Artist Bio, and inclusion in printed and online marketing materials related to the show.
COST BREAKDOWN: The following is a breakdown of just some of the costs related to showing at an art fair:
Booth Rental: $5000 (on the low end) Lighting: $600 (whether purchased or rented) Insurance: $200 (required by all fair venues) Tables & chairs: $500 (whether purchased or rented)
Advertising: $300 (business cards, flyers, all that)
Portfolio & presentation: $100 (a mead notebook won’t cut it)
Car rental & gas: $600 (how are you going to get the furniture and lighting)
Airfare: $500 (on Priceline)
Lodging & meals: $1500 (on Priceline) Dedicated staff: $??? (what do you think it is worth?)
Total cost of going it alone is more than $10,000. With no one there to help you.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Application and supporting materials must be received no later than February 15th, 2014.
SALES: Typically, galleries do a split of the total sale price with the artist. In many cases, the gallery takes 50% to 60% of the total amount that a piece of art sells for. This leaves less than half of the total selling price for the artist, the creator of the work, to take home. Something about that doesn’t seem right to us. The Exposure program aims to make the opportunity for an artist to show and sell work at the Fair as cost effective as possible. In this spirit we take only 30% of the total amount of the sale, leaving the artist with 70%.
SHIPPING: If you are planning on shipping your work for exhibition, we require that all work be received in New York between May 3rd and 4th, 2014. The shipping address and detailed instructions for shipment will be provided in the coming months for your planning purposes. Shipping of any remaining artwork back to the artist after the Fair is available at additional cost to the artist. FAQ: Do I have to participate in the Residency program to be able to participate in the Exposure program? No. We will be reviewing applications from present and former Artists In Residence as well as artists who have never participated in any other Starry Night programs to date. What does non-exclusive representation mean? With many galleries, there is a contract for exclusive representation that you, the artist, sign on for. This means that you can only show with that specific gallery unless they approve of it. With us, that is not the case. We represent you for the time that the Fair is going on, during Select Art fair, New York. During this time we are actively talking with other gallerists and collectors about your work, and letting them know you are available to sign on with their gallery at the end of the Fair. After the Fair is over, you are free to sign on with any gallery that wants to pick you up. In fact, that is our goal for you. If the Exposure program can leverage your work into gallery in New York, Los Angeles, London, or anywhere else, we will consider ours a job well done. This is as much about getting your top quality work picked up by a gallery as it is about getting your best work in front of serious collectors. What’s not included in the fees for the program? The participation fees do not include artist’s travel/ lodging (if you choose to attend in person), framing of artwork, shipping of artwork to and from the Fair, or personal liability insurance.
PAYMENT PLANS: We are able to offer monthly payment plans to all accepted artists, if they so choose.
PAYMENT METHODS: All fees are payable credit card or by check online through our secure payment system. Our monthly payment plan is available by request. This would require three payments of $1000, the first payment will be due within 7 days of acceptance.
