The Flint Union Cemetery of Worthington, Ohio announces an artist call for entry to create a three-dimensional art object for the newly developed Children’s Memorial Garden. This juried sculpture installation is open to sculptors and artists with regional connections or interest in Worthington, Ohio. Artists are invited to submit proposals for three-dimensional art suitable for outdoor display to be permanently installed as a feature in the newly designed Children’s Memorial Garden section within the Flint Union Cemetery in Worthington, Ohio. The newly expanded Flint Union Cemetery is located at 8187 Flint Rd, Columbus, OH 43235. The Children’s Memorial Garden in the Flint Union Cemetery is a special place where children are interred. Artists are requested to create a sculpture that will reflect the spirit of the needs of grieving parents and families, acting as an inspirational element for this intimate part the cemetery. All respondents are encouraged to visit the site. Guidelines for Sculpture Sculptures will be judged on appropriateness of the subject matter, artistic excellence and suitability for public art. Consideration will be given to safety in design, size and construction because the artwork will be located in an outdoor site where people might touch or climb on the work and is subject to the weather conditions of the Midwest. Subject Matter: Will appeal to many different religious, ethnic and cultural groups. Size: No more than 3 feet wide x 5 foot tall, not inclusive of base. Sculpture must fit on an existing 24” diameter concrete pad. Installation: Artist shall be responsible for providing a method of installation. Vehicles may be driven near the sculpture base for loading and unloading. Artist is responsible for anchoring sculpture to existing base in order to permanently affix sculpture on site. (Installation of the sculpture must be coordinated with the Cemetery Superintendent.) Compensation and Recognition Honorarium: $4,000 all inclusive. To be paid upon delivery and installation. Publicity and Recognition: The artist will be acknowledged in marketing materials and local publicity related to the Children’s Memorial Garden. The owner will coordinate with selected artist appropriate recognition. Timeline and Deadlines 10/30/2011– Deadline for Receipt of Entries 12/23/2011 – Notification of chosen artist via email 05/15/2012 – Installation of sculpture by artist Responsibilities of Accepted Artists Artist agrees to install the sculpture on or before May 15, 2012. Artist agrees that if there is any repair, maintenance, restoration or replacement of damaged or defective components, they will be consulted first to repair such a defect. Artist must coordinate all delivery and installation inclusive of the honorarium provided. Insurance An insurance policy held by Sharon Township and the Walnut Grove and Flint Union Cemeteries Board of Trustees will be maintained to cover general liability and property insurance for the artist once the sculpture arrives at the location and during the installation period. The artist will be asked to declare the insurance value of the art prior to installation. Sharon Township and the Walnut Grove and Flint Union Cemeteries Board of Trustees will not assume responsibility beyond coverage of the insurance policy, nor for damage to sculptures while in transit, during installation, or prior to owner acceptance of the installed artwork. Jury Jon Cook, Jury Chair, the Executive Director of the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center of Worthington, recently, served as part-time curator of visual arts for the Dublin Arts Council. Before his return to Columbus after a hiatus of 20 years, he helped the then start-up Houston Center for Contemporary Craft to become one of the more dynamic craft institutions in the south. He has curated, installed or juried more than 65 exhibitions in the past 6 years for a variety of cultural institutions, festivals and experiences across the US. The jury also consists of a sub-committee of six people. How to Enter An entry consists of: – Name, Address, Email, Phone, Website – A written proposal in Microsoft Word with a description of the proposed sculpture, dimensions, medium, approximate weight, assumed ending value and a sketch or design of the proposed sculpture, or if already constructed, a photograph (jpeg). – Artist’s resume or listing of representative work in Microsoft Word – Up to ten photographs (jpegs) representative of artist’s other work, each .jpg image shall not exceed 1.5 mb in size. – Each jpeg will be named as follows: ArtistName_ArtTitle.jpg Email or mail completed entry to: Peggy R.
