The Allegany Arts Council is pleased to announce the call for entries into the Allegany National Photography Competition and Exhibition, to be held at the Saville and Schwab Galleries in downtown Cumberland through the entire month of April 2018.

This 4th Annual event will meld the region’s rich concentration of photographic artists with an influx of national photographers in a juried competition for over $5000 in cash prizes. The 2018 juror is Karen Irvine, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 7th from 6-8 pm. Prizes will be awarded at the reception.

Application requirements and restrictions 
Maximum 6 entries per photographer. (No maximum per category.)
All artwork must be for sale, have been created by the submitting artist within the past three (3) years, and may not have been previously exhibited at the Allegany Arts Council’s galleries.

Categories and Descriptions

Category 1: Color
Two-dimensional photographic works of art printed in color on any medium/substrate (paper, canvas, metal, etc.) and using any process (wet darkroom, computer, etc), max 48” in width, professionally presented and wired for hanging.

Category 2: Black and White
Two-dimensional photographic works of art printed in black and white on any medium/substrate (paper, canvas, metal, etc.) and using any process (wet darkroom, computer, etc), max 48” in width, professionally presented and wired for hanging.

Category 3: Multi-dimensional
Any work that contains as it’s primary element a photograph or photographs in any format or medium, but does not fit into either of the other two categories. The photograph(s) can be time-varying or static and may be embedded in an external construct of the artist’s creation. The overall construct and presentation will have equal weighting with the photographic image in judging the merits of the entry. The work must be ready for display; free-standing, placed on a pedestal, or wired for hanging. Works should not weigh more than 30 lbs. or exceed 48 inches in any dimension. No video entries will be accepted. If needed, standard electrical AC power (60Hz, 120V) is available. We strongly urge that if the multi-dimensional nature of your entry is not obvious in a single image that you consider submitting a video showing your entry instead. Videos can provide a juror with a much better sense of a multi-dimensional piece.

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: You must enter two different works to enter this competition. The fee for entering those two works is $30. Each additional entry beyond that is $15.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: You may enter up to six works into this competition and there is no maximum per category. Be sure to check your Image Category Selector page to specify which of the three categories each image will be entered into.

IMPORTANT NOTE 3: You may enter a video of a multi-dimensional work instead of a digital image. Each visual of your work you submit, whether a digital image or a video, will count as a single entry.

The judge reserves the right to not present an award in any category if insufficient quantity or quality is in evidence.
