Charlie Hewitt

Presented by Center for Contemporary Printmaking

Charlie Hewitt was born in 1946, in Lewiston, Maine and grew up in Auburn and Brunswick, surrounded by the culture of the mill-working communities in the area. The shared priorities of these neighborhoods: the church, family and work, have been referenced symbolically in his art, and these influences and experiences are the foundation for new imagery in recent prints. The warning bells alerting  sailors and fisherman to the rocky coastal waters of Maine, as well as lobster buoys and baskets appear in new woodcuts, and reflect the artist’s return to Maine to raise his family. Charlie Hewitt's works have been acquired by The Metropolitan Museum, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The New York Public Library, The Library of Congress and The Portland Museum of Art, among others. The Bates College Museum of Art, in Lewiston, Maine is the repository of the complete archive of Charlie Hewitt’s graphic work.
