Painting: The Straw Hat. Carol Maltby won third place in the Art of the Heartland 2015 competition. Artist's Statement: I started painting using oils, however circumstances forced me to change to pen and ink. After several years, circumstances again forced me to change my medium. Colored pencil and graphite pencil has been my preferred medium for the last ten years. Applying the colored & graphite pencil on various surfaces, from mylar, stonehedge, letraset to my favorite of strathmore bristol board. I use both the plate and the vellum surfaces available on 3 to 5 ply thicknesses. as of lately I have been combining the two.
