I am an artist. I want to put what I see in my mind’s eye on paper, or canvas, or assemblage and bring my concept to fruition. There is a constant quest to find just the right mark, color, line, or placement on a blank surface. I want to realize my thought. Painting is my meditation. I paint to reveal the source of my emotional and intellectual insight. I never feel weary even after spending hours standing in front of an easel. Making art replenishes my spirit. When the work goes well and is good, It brings me intense release and satisfaction. I am intensely attuned to my immediate surroundings and sometimes I am overwhelmed by bits of luscious color, a weathered door, an architectural detail. My major body of work is inspired by history: The signs and symbols left behind by humanity’s first artists dating back to 39,000 BCE. Their marks are both mysterious and familiar, and perhaps even spiritual. Bettylee Harrington
