View groundbreaking work by Japanese designers who started a fashion revolution in Paris at the Denver Art Museum’s Shock Wave: Japanese Fashion Design, 1980s–90s. Featuring more than 70 looks by designers including Issey Miyake, Kenzo Takada, Kansai Yamamoto, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe, the exhibition illustrates the unique intersection of modernity and tradition in Japanese fashion during this period. Concepts like the incorporation of pop-culture motifs, the reinvention of Western notions of femininity and artistic collaboration challenged the fashion system and confronted the work of European designers.

Shock Wave features 20 recent acquisitions for the DAM’s collection, in addition to works on loan from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Local and national private lenders also provided pieces for the exhibition. Shock Wave is on view in level 6 of the North Building through May 28, 2017.

Included in general museum admission; free for youth 18 and younger every day thanks to Free for Kids, and free for all visitors on museum free days, thanks in part to the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD). The museum is closed Mondays. For more information about the exhibition and related programming, please visit denverartmuseum.org.
