Temporary Public Art Installations on East Avenue
Deadline: 5pm (EST)Thursday, February 15, 2018 Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) seeks proposals for site-specific, temporary public art that will enliven the East Avenue eighborhood. RoCo encourages proposals for incisive, surprising, and unique sculpture and installation art of all forms, including media-based works. Of particular interest are projects that connect visitors to the location, buildings, park landscape, community and/or history of the neighborhood. Proposals for works that prompt visitors to return multiple times to experience changes in the piece are encouraged. RoCo welcomes visual artists, sculptors, sound artists, performing artists, photographers, filmmakers, and others to submit a proposal.
RoCo’s public art program will give one artist the opportunity to envision, produce, and exhibit a sculpture or multimedia work adjacent to RoCo. The completed work will be exhibited to the public 24/7 for one to four months. The duration will be determined with RoCo staff based on the seasons and circumstances. Works may be offered for sale during the exhibition period. The artwork, if not sold by the end of the exhibition period, will remain the property of the artist. Artist will receive a $2,000 – $3,000 grant to support their project (50% materials, 50% artist stipend).
Artist proposals will be reviewed relative to the following criteria:
• Site specificity: ability of the work to engage art audiences and the general public with the location using elements
of surprise, humor, imagery, design, etc.
• Quality of the proposal and prior work
• Fit for RoCo and our neighbors
• Feasibility of the proposal
• Originality and timeliness
• Safety of visitors and passersby
This program is open to artists in the Greater Rochester area, New York artists, and national artists. Artists who
have exhibited in other exhibitions at RoCo are eligible to apply.
Site and Audience
Selected works must meet safety requirements and be able to withstand the effects of weather and public use for the duration of the installation. Prior to preparing proposals, applicants are encouraged to visit the location, a unique urban park in downtown Rochester, both during the day and at night. Applicants are also encouraged to learn about the history and context of the location and neighborhood. Artworks will be on display free of charge to passersby 24/7 while invigorating the site as a destination for contemporary art lovers. The site is visited by 300 to 600 people each week, with neighborhood festivals attracting many more people. There is general lighting in the park and specific flood lighting for the main installation site. Though one public art pad has been identified, RoCo is open to considering other unique approaches.
Proposals must be received by 5pm (EST), Thursday February 15, 2018 in order to be considered.
The potential schedule is as follows:
Production period begins: March 10, 2018.
