L.A. PHOTO CURATOR: ‘The Tangible Photograph’ with curator Blue Mitchell
L.A. Photo Curator
Entry Deadline: Jan. 14
Blue Mitchell, (Publisher, One Twelve Publishing / Diffusion Magazine) says, “One of my favorite pastimes is exploring old junk shops and and antique stores. I love vintage books, old photographs, ephemera, boxes, trinkets, weird oddities, games etc. I suppose I’m a nostalgic person but the timelessness of these objects inspires me to create things myself that have a timeless physicality to them. I enjoy artwork that have visual impactfulness and a certain contextual materiality. I practice this in both my own art making as well as my publishing projects of other artists’ work.
For this call for art I’m hoping to present works of photo-based art that truly transcend the notion of the 2-d (or screen) photograph. My hope with this exhibit is for viewers to expand their understanding of what photography is – or can be. As curator Katherine Ware writes in Diffusion, volume XI: The Matter of Light, “…sometimes it [a photograph] needs to have some holes punched in it. Sometimes it needs to be folded, spindled, microwaved, and duplicated — punctuated — so we can see it better.”
20% of artist fees go to charity. 10% to the curator’s charity and 10% to the first place winner’s charity.
Mitchell has chosen Caldera Arts as his charity.
Caldera is a catalyst for the transformation of underserved youth through innovative, year-round art and environmental programs. Caldera serves Oregon youth from both urban and rural communities with limited access to educational and economic resource opportunities.
